Probe launched into ‘ambitious’ Scottish tourism growth plans
An inquiry into the tourism industry in Scotland is to focus on how revenues can be raised 50% by 2015.
A Scottish parliamentary committee has been established to head the inquiry looking into the feasibility of plans for tourism growth for the country over the next eight years.
Factors to be considered include investment in the industry, the availability of skilled staff, the quality of infrastructure and the quality of the visitor experience.
The future of VisitScotland will also be considered.
The inquiry follows the Scottish government adopting the ambition for a 50% increase in tourism by 2015.
Tavish Scott MSP, convenor of the economic, energy and tourism committee, admitted that members were concerned “that the intention to increase tourism revenue by 50% is overly ambitious unless significant steps are taken”.
He added: “This inquiry will focus upon the key challenges to meeting this ambition and the effective measures to overcome these.”
