St Kitts, one of the smaller but most progressive islands within the Caribbean, is making all the right moves to ensure that 2010 is a breakthrough year for UK inbound tourism.

Speaking at its UK office in London, tourism authority CEO Rosecita Jeffers was confident that the hard work put in during 2009 will reap benefits not just next year but in the years to come.

Coming on the back of the official announcement from British Airways of a doubling of its capacity to the island from March 2010, Jeffers pointed to other factors that will hold the country’s most important industry in good stead.

“We are determined to stick with our strategy of ensuring that St Kitts remains a truly Caribbean experience for our visitors,” said Jeffers

“This means us determined to be as responsible as possible with our development – making sure that new builds are environmentally friendly, that we preserve our history and culture, that our accommodation offers high levels of service but from a diverse stock, that our food and drink is where possible sourced locally and that our citizens are offered the right education and training to pursue careers in hospitality and tourism.

“All in all the strategy is working towards a sustainable future that benefits the man and woman on the street.”

Developments on the island include projects such as Christoph harbour including a low rise Mandarin Oriental, Kittian Hill, Silver Reef and the new Tom Fazio golf course going ahead despite the economic downturn.

Policies of lower tax for hotels, restaurants and other services instigated by minister Ricky Skerritt early in 2009 continue to offer instant support to the economy.

Sports tourism will see the England women cricket team playing in the ICC 2010 T20 Women’s World Cup on the island.

With a new e-focus on marketing and efforts to spread the word at the heart of travellers’ minds through sponsorship of boarding cards at Heathrow Terminal 5,  St Kitts is making its mark in the UK.
