Protests bring chaos to Athens
Greece: Calls to repeat strike action in opposition to war in Iraq
Greece has been hit my massive street demonstrations against the war in Iraq – and protestors have vowed to keep the pressure up until military action is over.
Travel in and out of the country, as well as internally, has been severely disrupted by a four-hour air traffic controllers strike that caused the cancellation or postponement of hundreds of flights. Some 10,000 people are estimated to have joined a protest on the streets of Athens, while 15,000 marched to the US Embassy in Thessaloniki.
All of the main political parties in Greece are opposed to the war, and public opinion is generally opposed to the ongoing military action. There have been several mass protests in Greece since the start of the war, and organisers of the demonstrations have promised that they will continue – even if it brings chaos to the country.
Unions have called for another day of action today and more protests in the coming days and weeks.
