Providence R.I. gets first transatlantic flights
T.F. Green Airport in Providence, Rhode Island is celebrating its first ever transatlantic scheduled service with the announcement of flights operated by Condor Airlines to Frankfurt, Germany.
The seasonal service will fly on Mondays and Thursdays in each direction on 259-seat Boeing 767-300 jets starting next year on June 18 through September.
"This is a huge victory for Rhode Island, and our expectation is that this is going to lead to other opportunities," said Kelly Fredericks, president of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation.
To secure a deal with Condor, airport officials have waived landing charges for the first two years and will share marketing costs with the airline.
Mayor Scott Avedisian welcomed the service and hoped it would make the city "a gateway to travel in Europe."
Frankfurt airport is Europe’s third busiest with a capacity for 65 million passengers annually.
Condor, which is owned by London based Thomas Cook Group, also plans to start flying twice weekly to Portland, Oregon on June 19.
