Qantas/Jetstar Parliamentary enquiry fails
AAP reports that a parliamentary inquiry into the impact of the Qantas takeover on Jetstar has refused to recommend the adoption of legislation to protect the budget carrier.
Family First Senator Stephen Fielding successfully called for the inquiry after private equity consortium Airline Partners Australia announced an $11.1 billion offer for Qantas, but he has failed in his bid for support of his bill which would put conditions on any sale of Jetstar similar to those already imposed on Qantas.
“The committee recommends that the Senate reject the bill,” the Senate committee report said, tabled in parliament late Tuesday.
Senator Fielding said his legislation, known as The Qantas Sale Act (Keep Jetstar Australian) Amendment Bill 2007, was designed to protect Jetstar from foreign ownership. He wrote a dissenting report.
“Currently the Qantas Sale Act forces Qantas to keep jobs and operations in Australia,” Senator Fielding said.
“But the Act does not apply to associated entities like Jetstar and Australian Airlines.”
Queensland Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce joined Senator Fielding in his criticism.
“If you truly believe in the authenticity of intent of the Qantas Sales Act you must believe that it would cover airlines that were progenitors of and controlled by Qantas,” Senator Joyce said.
“I would support any competent piece of legislation which brought this outcome about.”
