Qantas sales boost following Emirates alliance
Qantas has sold six times more tickets to Europe under its alliance with Emirates than it did previously.
The alliance between Qantas and Emirates officially began at the weekend with the first flights to London via Dubai taking off from Sydney and Melbourne after getting approval from competition watchdogs.
But the Australia carrier said it had sold six times more tickets to Europe in the past nine weeks as part of its partnership than it did the same time last year.
Bookings from Emirates passengers for travel on Qantas’s domestic network are almost seven times higher when compared with the same time in 2012.
The Australian carrier’s CEO Alan Joyce described it as ‘the most important deal in Qantas’ 90-plus-year history’.
The two airlines plan to codeshare, and coordinate on sales, marketing and pricing on flights between Australia and Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
Joyce told a press conference at Sydney airport: "Before today, the Qantas network offered five one-stop code share destinations into Europe and the UK with our partners. From today, we offer access to more than 30 destinations in Europe on the combined Qantas and Emirates network."
Joyce added that he was ‘very optimistic’ that Qantas International would return to profitability by 2016 and said the airline would begin considering expansion plans.
Emirates president Tim Clark told the Sydney Morning Herald that the two carriers have only just started the process of aligning fares, following Australian Competition and Commission approval.
"We have only just got the approval to actually start aligning fares," Mr Clark said. "We couldn’t even contemplate that beforehand."
