UK: World’s largest cruise liner will be ready for service within a year

The world’s largest cruise liner, the Queen Mary 2, has taken to the sea for the first time and will have its first sea trials in the autumn.

The massive ship, which weighs some 150,000 tonnes, is now sitting in the river Loire at the Alstom Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard, in Brittany, France. Once it has been fitted out it will be delivered to its owners Cunard at the end of the year; its maiden voyage, to Florida, is planned for the early part of next year.

As reported by News From Abroad, the ship will then start service between Southampton and New York, taking over from the current Cunard flagship, the QE2. The two ships will make a simultaneous crossing of the Atlantic, starting in New York on April 25. The massive new ship will be able to accommodate some 2,500 passengers.
