Quarantine-free amber list travel plan to be announced in July

Thursday, 25 Jun, 2021 0

The government will outline plans next month to allow fully vaccinated to skip isolating on their return from an amber list destination.

It marks a long overdue boost for a travel industry pummelled by the pandemic.

Transport Minister Grant Shapps said details about how it will work will be published in July.

"Thanks to our successful vaccination program, our intention is that later in the summer, UK residents who are fully vaccinated will not have to isolate when travelling from amber list countries."

The government declined to offer any more specifics other than ‘later in the summer.’ .

The Department for Transport said it would likely start applying to UK residents first before expanding to foreign arrivals.

"They will still be required to take a pre-departure test and a test on day two, and any positive results will be sequenced to continue to manage the risk of importing variants," DfT said.

"At the same time, we intend to remove the guidance that people should not travel to amber countries. Pending decisions on whether under-18s should routinely be offered vaccination, we will also take clinical advice on whether regular testing can provide a safe alternative to quarantine for children," it added.

It comes as Malta, the Balearic Islands and a number of Caribbean destinations were added to the quarantine-free green list.
