Rail services suspended in Southern Thailand after bomb blast

Tuesday, 6 September 20163 min read
All rail services in Thailand’s three southern provinces have been suspended for at least 10 days after the weekend’s deadly bomb blast.
One person was killed and three were injured on a Sungai Kolok-Hat Yai train service in Pattani province.
A bomb was placed trackside and detonated as the train passed.
The dead man was identified as a railway employee.
The explosion blew the end carriage from the rest of the train.
The State Railway of Thailand has laid on bus replacement services for rail passengers stranded by the closure.
Authorities have stepped up the security presence in the region, said State Railway of Thailand deputy governor Thanongsak Pongprasert.
Thailand’s restive south bordering Malaysia is majority muslim and has been fighting for autonomy for years.
Bomb and gun attacks take place regularly in the region and most nations have open-ended travel advisories warning citizens against travel there.
