Red faced monkeys in hot water with Travel Japan by H.I.S.

Wednesday, 24 Sep, 2008 0

Travel Japan by H.I.S is offering the chance to get up close and personal with the country’s famous troupe of hot-spring bathing Snow Monkeys found in the Jigokudani-Yaenkoen Park on the main Japanese island of HonshÅ«.

Just one hour away by road from the popular Hakuba Valley ski region, the park is the only place on the planet where visitors can see the primates taking hot springs baths – or onsen – in the wild.

Native to northern Japan, the red-faced monkeys, officially known as Japanese Macaques, are in fact the most northern-living non-human primates and can survive temperatures of below -15 C – which probably explains why they like taking hot springs baths.

Priced from just AUD100* per person, the Travel Japan by H.I.S. tour is scheduled to operate on a limited date schedule from Hakuba in December, January, February and March.

The full day tour includes entry to the Jigokudani – Yaenkoen Park to see the Snow Monkeys, a visit to the 1400-year-old Zenkoji Temple in Nagano and a walking tour of Obuse Town, one of the region’s best preserved traditional cities and famous for its chestnuts.

A Japanese style lunch is also included in the price.

*Conditions apply. Please note the Snow Monkey tours will operate on 24 December 2008, 07, 14, 21 and 28 January, 04, 18 and 25 February and 04, 11, 18 and 25 March 2009.
