Regulator to block Qantas-JAL alliance
Australia’s competition watchdog plans to reject the proposed alliance between Qantas and Japan Airlines. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it will block the tie-up over concerns it will lead to higher airfares and less choice for travellers.
"Here’s the number-one airline of each country wanting to get together. It’s a significant reduction in competition," said ACCC chair Rod Sims.
The alliance would allow Qantas and JAL to sell fares on each other’s flights and coordinate flight schedules and airfare pricing.
