Renewable energy opportunities in the tourism industry
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has published a new publication: Switched On: Renewable Energy Opportunities in the Tourism Industry
As the largest business sector in the world economy, tourism employs 200 million people, generates $3.6 trillion in economic activity and accounts for one in every 12 jobs worldwide. The growth and benefits have been powered mainly by fossil fuels, which come at an increasing environmental cost and which can ultimately threaten the health of the industry.
The new handbook from UNEP/DTIE explores how clean and renewable forms of energy can sustainably power this expanding economic sector. Switched on: Renewable Energy Opportunities in the Tourism Industry provides the latest information on solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass (plant and animal matter) resources. The publication demonstrates how tourism businesses powered by renewable energy can reduce environmental impacts, generate benefits for local communities and, often, lower costs.
Written in simple non-technical language with specific tourism case studies, the handbook can help small and medium-sized tourism businesses assess which technologies and systems are most cost-effective, and how to negotiate with equipment suppliers and installers. Readers can follow clear, logical guidelines addressing details and costs of available technologies, designs and applications.
Switched On: Renewable Energy Opportunities in the Tourism Industry can also be used as a reference manual by government or consultants to develop sustainable consumption projects and relevant policies.
The Handbook can be ordered or downloaded as pdf at: http://www.uneptie.org/pc/tourism/library/energy.htm
