Return of ash causes further flight disruption

Airports in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland faced closure from this morning due to fresh concerns about volcanic ash.

Other UK airports may be affected later today in a rapdly changing situation. 

Glasgow, Prestwick, Inverness, Stornoway, Benbecula, Tiree, Islay, Barra, Campbeltown and Derry airports shut between 07.00 and 13.00.

Glasgow, Prestwick, Stornoway, Benbecula, Tiree, Islay, Barra and Campbletown  were to remain closed from 13.00 until 19.00 tonight together with Belfast International, Belfast City and Derry airports.

Dublin arport was due to shut between 10.00 and 16.00.

Edinburgh airport and others in northern England were also threatened with closure, including Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and Carlisle, the Civil Aviation Authority warned.

"However, based on our current forecasts, CAA has assessed that these airports can safely remain open, but passengers should check with their airline before travelling to the airport, as the situation is dynamic," a statement released at 02.00 this morning said.

"The situation remains changeable, so passengers expecting to travel tomorrow from airports in Scotland, Northern ireland and the north of england and North Wales should contact their airlines to check whether their flight is operating."

The CAA added that airports in the South East of England are not expected to be affected tomorrow, based on current forecasts.

Ryanair cancelled all flights from Derry, Belfast and Prestwick for the whole of today (Wednesday). The airline said Edinburgh airport was due to open for its flights from 15.00.

All Ryanair services from Dublin and Knock were suspended from 11.00 for the rest of the day. 

The airline warned that the CAA is cautioning that airspace over Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester may suffer possible closures later today which may cause disruptions or cancellations of flights to and from these airports.

EasyJet said all flights to and from Belfast City, Belfast International, Glasgow and Inverness will be cancelled between 07:00 and 13:00.

Flights to and from Edinburgh and Aberdeen are now planned operate normally, however, this may change at short notice, the airline said.

"We therefore strongly advise all passengers who are booked to travel with easyJet on flights to / from Scotland and Northern Ireland today to visit easyJet.com before travelling to the airport," EasyJet advised.
 
Flybe cancelled all flights from Glasgow and Belfast City for the remainder of the day. 
 
The carrier also cancelled flights from the Isle of Man and Dubin to a range of UK airports 
 
Bmi cancelled some Heathrow-Dubin and Glasgow flights.
