Rex increases Burnie flights
Airline Regional Express will boost flights to north-western Tasmania after Qantas decided to scrap its Burnie service.
Rex managing director Geoff Breust said the airline would add 14 new flights to its Burnie to Melbourne service by mid-August.
The additional flights would increase the service to three return flights seven days a week, and four return flights on four days each week.
Mr Breust said the withdrawal of QantasLink on July 31 made the market more viable and a better proposition for the long term.
“We are now determined to increase our flight frequency and seating capacity to fill the gap,” he said.
Mr Breust said Rex would focus on improving its level of service to Burnie.
“We believe Rex’s strategy of bringing reliable and affordable air services to regional communities enables us to provide an even better level of service to Burnie than that received in recent years,” he said.
“Rex is prepared to invest strongly in partnership with the Burnie Airport Corporation, state and local government and the local community to achieve the best outcome.”
