Reykjavik, Amsterdam, Vancouver…and Hull
Hull has been named as the eighth best city in the world to visit this year as it prepares to become the UK City of Cuture in 2017.
Rough Guides placed the Yorkshire city ahead of Vancouver in Canada and the Indian city of Agra, home of the world-famous Taj Mahal, in its top 10 cities for 2016.
No other UK city made the top 10 list.
Hull, which is equidistant to London and Edinburgh, is undergoing a £25 million revamp and the city’s chief executive Martin Green said it was ‘going through great positive change’.
Rough Guides highlighted Hull for its ‘old-time pubs, cobbled streets and eight excellent museums’.
World’s Top 10 Cities for 2016:
1. Reykjavik, Iceland
2. Mexico City, Mexico
3. Seoul, South Korea
4. Ljubljana, Slovenia
5. Wroclaw, Poland
6. Nashville, USA
7. Amsterdam, Netherlands
8. Hull, UK
9. Vancouver, Canada
10. Agra, India
"Like a lot of cities of its type Hull has suffered economically, but I think there is a lot going on here to change that and it’s not just about the fact we are the UK City of Culture in 17," said Green.
