Rhodes police confirm crime wave
Greek police have confirmed that British tourists caused a crime wave on the island of Rhodes over the summer.
The Daily Mail, quoting a police report, says that the number of UK tourists arrested on the island doubled this year. The report states that in the four months to mid-September, there were two killings, nine rapes of British women, 18 arrests for drug offences and two thefts. Furthermore, 49 British tourists were arrested for exposing themselves in public.
In total there were 105 arrests – and shamefully, 99 of them were British. This compares less than favourable with the figures from last year, when there were 32 tourists arrested; 28 of them were British.
The Mail reports that the police figures will be released in Greece on Wednesday at the same time as a tourism summit called to deal with the problem. The Mayor of Faliraki, John Iatrides, reportedly told the newspaper: “The cancellations from the holiday hooliganism constitute a considerable revenue threat for both British and Greek tourism interests.”
