Rio’s new tourist warning over crime
Travellers to Rio will soon notice a huge campaign aimed at letting tourists know more about the dangers of visiting the city.
According to the online news provider Canada.com, visitors will start to hear reminders at airports and hotels that they should leave their valuables at their accommodation and should never take valuables to the beach.
The website reports that the campaign will also feature the distribution of some 300,000 advice cards, printed in English, French Spanish and German. The cards will give advice on “not becoming a victim”.
Zeca Borges, who heads the campaign, is quoted as saying: “We cannot have a policeman on every corner but we do have an honest citizen on every corner who can play a part. This information will help the police find where the gangs that rob tourists operate.”
Nearly 3,000 crimes against tourists were reported at the famous Brazilian resort last year, but that figure may not be a true representation because all crimes against tourists have to be reported at one particular police station in the city.
