Risky business: Why people gamble with travel insurance

Monday, 23 Nov, 2010 0

A survey conducted on behalf of healthcare specialist Bupa Australia has found that more than half of all respondents (55%) purchase travel insurance based on their perception of a country’s safety.

Nearly half of all respondents perceived Africa as the riskiest destination in terms of representing high potential for travellers to be involved in a robbery, accident or unexpected illness, while New Zealand was cited by respondents as the safest destination.

According to the survey, South America was perceived as the second riskiest destination by 31% of those surveyed, followed by South East Asia at 14%, North America at 6% and Europe at less than 2%.

Bupa Australia’s Shane Williamson said, “Unfortunately, it appears that some Australians believe they only need travel insurance if they’re running with the bulls, or engaging in daredevil behaviour, which is simply not true.”

Bupa Australia provides a national travel insurance product under the brands MBF, HBA and Mutual Community.
