River cruising to compete with city breaks

River cruising could compete with city breaks as industry experts predict a strong future for the sector.

The ‘Future Opportunities of River Cruising’ white paper has been jointly released by Accord, an integrated marketing agency specialising in travel, CLIA and global research giant GfK.

Based on 600+ UK customer interviews, it predicts river cruising provides a huge opportunity for growth.

And not just in the cruising sector but also competing with city breaks’ operators.

Helen Roberts, consumer & retail industry lead at GfK, said: "Currently it’s a small share of the holiday market, but one that has the potential to attract a much larger volume of travellers."

Sally Winfield, chief operating officer for Accord said: "The study reveals that it is important to remember that river cruises are not only competing with one another but with other types of holidays – mainly with city breaks. As travel marketing experts we can use our wider industry knowledge to the advantage of our clients."
