Riyadh Air announces its inaugural flight on October 26. But there is a trick…

Friday, 10 Oct, 2025 0

Saudi Arabia newest air carrier Riyadh Air committed itself -when created back to early 2023- that it would start operating passengers’ flights by early 2025. However delays in B787 aircraft delivery by Boeing plagued the airline’s calendar. The American aircraft manufacturer will now only deliver Riyadh Air first two aircraft by early next year. Originally, the Saudi carrier expected the delivery of 8 aircraft this year.

However, fulfilling its commitment to commence operations in 2025, Riyadh Air just announced to launch its first flights to London Heathrow from October 26th, marking a critical phase in its “Pathway to Perfect” go-to-market plan.

The airline will fly in an eight-year old Boeing B787 Dreamliner acquired from Oman Air. It is in fact Riyadh Air’s technical spare aircraft named “Jamila”. The inaugural flight will then be far from the intended glamorous launching that the carrier had in mind.

There is another trick to anyone tempted to start on the world’s newest carrier : flights are not to be booked online or through agents!

The carefully sequenced flights will initially on sale to select groups and Riyadh Air employees. They are considered a critical phase in ensuring unparalleled operational readiness ahead of receiving the first aircraft deliveries from Boeing. But it becomes a necessity as Riyadh Air needs to utilize its awarded slots at London Heathrow (LHR) to be sure to retain them.

Flights will depart Riyadh at 0315 (RX401) with an early morning arrival time into London Heathrow at 0730, the return flights depart London at 0930 (RX402), arriving back to Riyadh at 1915 (all times local).

Waiting for 2026

This important phase of “Pathway to Perfect” will see flights to Dubai added soon after, transparently demonstrating Riyadh Air’s rigorous commitment to operational excellence. Through a thorough assessment program of these initial launch flights on Jamila, the airline is building operational strength for a smooth, reliable, and world-class premium travel experience. It then will reflect Saudi Arabia’s dedication to the highest standards of quality. Further exciting new routes are set to be announced in the coming weeks for winter 2025 and summer 2026.

“This isn’t just a launch; it’s a tangible realization of a vision to connect Saudi Arabia to the world, a core pillar of Saudi Vision 2030,” justified Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air.

“Our commitment to begin operations in 2025 is being fulfilled. This rigorous flight program on Jamila allows us to fine-tune every detail, ensuring a seamless, reliable, and world-class experience. This carefully sequenced approach is our pathway to perfect, and we are now incredibly close to full operations with further destinations to be announced in the coming weeks as our new aircraft are delivered.”

Meanwhile, the airline unveiled its first premium lounge, the “Hafawa Lounge” at Riyadh King Khalid International Airport. The nearly 2,000-m2 facility offers seating for around 370 guests across multiple themed areas.

The delivery of Riyadh Air own aircraft should then open booking to all passengers. Hopefully in the first quarter of 2026.
