Rolls-Royce to build £85m Scottish plant

Aero-engine firm Rolls-Royce is to build an £85 million factory in Scotland to replace its existing facility at Hillington, near Glasgow.

The company said the new factory will safeguard up to 1,000 jobs in the west of Scotland.

Construction of the new 50,000 sq. m factory will begin this summer and is expected to be completed in 2005. A number of greenfield sites are being considered for the relocation and a choice will be made by the end of May.

Mr Royan Anthony, Managing Director – Compressor Systems, Rolls-Royce, said: “This £85 million project is a demonstration of the company’s commitment to Scotland and a tribute to the skills, experience and commitment of our workforce at Hillington. We will create a world-class Centre of Excellence for aerospace component manufacture at the new site.

“Hillington is an old plant and it is not suitable for the modern manufacturing systems we need to employ to remain competitive. We looked at a number of alternative locations for a new facility, including some overseas. The skills, experience and commitment of our Scottish workforce were important factors in our decision to remain here.”

Rolls-Royce engines power commercial aircraft in every segment of the aerospace market. It has customers using both fixed and rotary wing aircraft in over 150 countries, including more than 500 airlines, 4,000 corporate and utility operators and 160 armed forces.
