Routehappy: In-flight Wi-Fi availability more common but still slow

Saturday, 17 Jan, 2017 0
Passengers have a 83% chance of getting in-flight Wi-Fi when flying on US airlines according to the latest Routehappy industry report.

That is up from about 74% in 2015.

However Routehappy, which assesses onboard airline amenities, said that percentage dropped to just 28% globally.

There is now 70 airlines worldwide offering in-flight connectivity.

United Airlines was one of the top carriers, along with Emirates and Lufthansa for the availability of Wi-Fi on long haul international routes.

While in-flight Wi-Fi is being rolled out at a rapid pace in the US and beyond, Internet speeds are still frustratingly slow.

Just 7.2% of planes worldwide offer Wi-Fi speeds capable of streaming movies, it said.

That is up slightly from 6% from a year ago.

Routehappy says JetBlue and some planes in the United Airlines fleet offer the best Wi-Fi speeds.

JetBlue last week announced it has rolled on Wi-Fi across its entire fleet
