Royal Caribbean Debuts AI-powered musical tool for travel photos

Great travel photos are not only for hashtag-heavy Instagram posting.

Royal Caribbean International hopes to make your best vacation images sing – literally.

Introducing SoundSeeker, the line has unveiled a first-of-its-kind AI-powered tool which generates a soundtrack based on the specific visual content of a digital photo.

The patent-pending tool uses machine learning to analyze images based on the color, landscape, the backdrop, body language and facial expressions.

Based on these criteria, it turns them into a shareable soundtrack.

"People of all ages crave new ways to share their best experiences on social media. This unprecedented tool allows you to put a completely unique, multisensory spin on sharing those memories – now friends and followers can see and hear your life’s adventures," said Jim Berra, chief marketing officer, Royal Caribbean International.

The tool was created in association with Berklee College of Music’s Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship.

"The work of BerkleeICE expands our students’ definition of what can be accomplished with music education by pushing the boundaries of creative expression utilizing technology," said Panos A. Panay, Berklee vice president for innovation and strategy and MD of BerkleeICE.

The software uses Google Cloud Vision to identify objects, facial expressions and colors in a photo and can generate more than one million unique pieces of music based on custom base tracks which were made exclusively for the cruise line.

It covers a variety of genres including 90s hip-hop, rock, and electronic dance music.
