Royal Caribbean outlines hi-tech innovations for Quantum of the Seas
Royal Caribbean International is installing a range of tech features for new ship Quantum of the Seas, including chip-enabled smart wristbands, that can unlock cabins, radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled bag tagging and even a robotic bartender.
The wristbands offer access to cabins and operate as a streamlined payment gateway for onboard purchases.
Guests can track their luggage in real time from drop-off prior to the sailing until disembarkation.
Also, guests can produce their boarding documents online and upload a photo ID to shorten the often lengthy check-in process.
Speaking at a press event at the ship’s construction dock in Germany, Royal Caribbean chairman Richard Fain said Quantum’s guests will go from "sidewalk to ship in 10 minutes."
Vastly improved internet speeds are also planned for the Quantum-class ships, or as Fain says "boatloads of bandwidth."
Another interesting innovation announced is a robotic bartender able to mix drinks at the aptly named Bionic Bar.
Guests place orders via tablets and watch as the ‘bartender’ makes the perfect Martini.
Fain also said Quantum is out of dry dock and will begin sea trials by the end of September.
Following swiftly behind, Anthem of the Seas is being prepared for assembly in dry dock in September.
