Royal wedding easter break bonanza? Really?

Tuesday, 10 Mar, 2011 0

Us Brits, it seems, are a hard-working bunch who hadn’t even thought of the holiday possibilities surrounding the royal wedding.

Instead of the usual workshy-based findings that most surveys throw up about the typical Briton, one compiled by travel add-ons company HolidayExtras.com found that a whopping 76% of us were either not bothered about booking a crafty couple of days off between bank holidays to create an 11-day break – or didn’t realise you could.

The survey showed that less than one in six people planned to create an extended break for themselves, thanks to Kate and Wills’ nuptials, and that just 16% of men and 20% of women had done the maths and maximized it.

All you need to do to create your 11-day Easter bonanza is to book the three working days off between Easter Monday and the royal wedding on Friday April 29. That way, you will be off work between April 22 and May 3.

On reflection, Travelmole is a bit concerned that maybe people just didn’t realise what is on offer, here.

However, looking on the bright side, many have been concerned that the mass of holidays would affect small businesses and the sluggish UK economy. So the news that it hasn’t dawned on anyone that they could put their feet up for 11 days or take a holiday might be a good thing.

Head of product innovation and development at HolidayExtras.com Anthony Clarke-Cowell said: “It is surprising that more people aren’t taking advantage of this extended break but employers must be breathing a huge sigh of relief. The three short business weeks combined with workers taking 11 day holidays could be crippling for small businesses who are already struggling in a tough economic climate.

“It’s estimated that bank holidays cost the British economy six billion a year so surprisingly it’s not necessarily a bad thing that most Brits won’t be turning the three consecutive bank holidays into an extra-long holiday at the expense of employers.”
