Ryanair challenged over new baggage policy
Italy’s competition authority, Antitrust, has launched an inquiry into Ryanair’s recent hand-luggage policy change.
All passengers can carry a small personal bag, which must be able to fit under the seat in front, but, from November 1, only priority customers will be able to carry a second bag of up to 10kg.
Anyone else wanting to do so must pay extra. Prices start at £8 at the time of the flight booking, but are more expensive when booked at a later date, such as when the passenger checks in online or at the airport.
Antitrust claims hand luggage is an ‘essential element of transport’ and so Ryanair and other carriers should include the price in the cost of a ticket.
Sky News reports Antitrust believes the new Ryanair policy could ‘amount to unfair commercial practice in that it distorts the final price of the ticket and does not allow a true comparison with other airlines’ prices’.
