Ryanair plans even less frills
Ryanair is reportedly to take the “no-frills” concept to a new height, with the introduction of charges for carrying baggage in the hold of its aircraft.
According to The Times, the carrier’s passengers are “taking too many unnecessary items on trips”, Ryanair is planning to tighten its baggage restrictions over the next three years.
Specifically, the newspaper reports, the carrier will start charging for items carried in the hold within three years – and that passengers who only take hand luggage could get a £5 “refund” on their tickets.
Chief executive Michael O’Leary is quoted as saying: “We want to find a way of banning hold baggage, which represents a large part of our costs.” EasyJet, unsurprisingly enough, criticised the proposals.
A spokesman reportedly said that the airline had no intention of following Ryanair’s lead, and that the Irish firm would lose millions of passengers to its rivals if it put a ban on hold luggage.
