Ryanair signs multi-billion dollar Boeing deal

Ryanair has signed an agreement with Boeing to purchase up to 200 new Boeing 737 MAX 200 ‘gamechanger’ aircraft in a deal worth over $22 billion.

The first of the new aircraft, which the airline has 100 firm orders and 100 options for, will be ready by 2019 and will reduce fuel consumption by up to 18% and noise emissions by 40%, claims Ryanair.

The new planes will fit in eight more seats than Ryanair’s existing fleet but also claims to include more legroom.

It says the new aircraft will help growth from 82 million customers per year in 2014 to more than 150 million by 2024 when the final planes are delivered.

Following approval by Ryanair’s shareholders at an EGM in late November, this order will become Boeing’s largest ever aircraft order from a European airline.

The agreement comes the day before the airline takes delivery of the first of 180 new Boeing 737-800 aircraft which sees its fleet grow from 304 to 420 (allowing for lease returns), and traffic rise from 82m last year to more than 112m by 2019.

Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said: "Ryanair is proud and honoured to become the lead operator of  Boeing’s "gamechanger" 737 MAX 200 aircraft which will expand our fleet to 520 aircraft by 2024 and create another 3,000 new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers in Europe."
