A search has started for a new head of EasyJet after CEO Andy Harrison announced his departure “to seek new challenges”.

Harrison will stay on until June 30 next year to enable a smooth transition, the budget carrier said.

His terms of employment have bee altered to include an “appropriate retention arrangement”.

In other changes, Sir Michael Rake is to take over from Sir David Michels as group chairman from January 1. Sir David will resume the role of senior independent director.

Harrison, who became CEO four years ago, said: “EasyJet is a great company with a strong management team and I  am sure under Mike’s chairmanship, EasyJet will continue to grow from strength to strength.

“I am looking forward to being part of the process of selecting my successor and am committed to ensuring a smooth transition.

“I have loved being a part of EasyJet’s success but am now looking forward to moving on to a new challenge.”
