Seattle to cash in as highest priced destination this Labor Day

Thursday, 28 Aug, 2012 0

Seattle is the USA’s most expensive destination for US travelers this Labor Day weekend, based on hotel prices, according to a new survey by CheapHotels.org.  The survey compared hotel rates for 20 popular US destinations for the Labor Day weekend period spanning August 31 to September 3 (Labor Day).

Hotel fares in Seattle over the Labor Day weekend average at least $312 per night for the cheapest 3-star hotel room.

Runners up include Virginia Beach and Atlantic City, cashing in at $309 and $286 per night respectively for the lowest-priced available hotel room.

The survey says that part of the reason for Seattle’s high price tags is the annual Bumbershoot Festival, which takes place over the Labor Day weekend. The music and arts festival typically drives around 100,000 visitors to the city each year. As a result, hotel rates are around 65% higher than normal, according to the survey.

The results below show the 10 most expensive destinations in the United States for this year’s Labor Day weekend. Prices shown are based on the daily rate for each accommodation’s cheapest available double room (minimum 3-star hotel) for the time period of August 31 through September 3.

  1. Seattle $312
  2. Virginia Beach $309
  3. Atlantic City $286
  4. Philadelphia $269
  5. Boston $246
  6. New York City $224
  7. Chicago $213
  8. San Francisco $179
  9. Portland $170
  10. Austin $163
