Second Royal Caribbean ship misses out port call in restive San Juan
A second Royal Caribbean ship has skipped a scheduled stop in San Juan as civil unrest continues to escalate in Puerto Rico.
A day after Empress of the Seas canceled a port call, Harmony of the Seas also did the same, the line said.
The ship will instead continue to the next scheduled port of call at St. Maarten, Royal Caribbean spokesman Owen Torres said.
"Due to the ongoing civil unrest in San Juan, Puerto Rico, we have cancelled Harmony of the Seas’ call. Concern for the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew members is our top priority."
Harmony of the Seas is on a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise out of Port Canaveral.
The line has not indicated whether a third ship, Allure of the Seas, will suffer the same fate.
The Allure is scheduled to visit San Juan on Thursday.
Carnival Cruise Line has a ship due to dock in San Juan next Monday and continues to monitor the situation, brand ambassador John Heald said on Facebook.
Puerto Ricans have been demonstrating en masse calling for the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rossello after the release of text messages in which he and colleagues allegedly used homophobic and misogynistic language.
