Security guards puff over suspect bag
Toulouse airport evacuated because of an abandoned roll of pastry
France’s Toulouse airport was evacuated yesterday because of a roll of puff pastry, difficult though it might be to believe. The unlikely tale is reported in today’s edition of The Guardian, which tells the story with a distinct glint in its eye – if a newspaper can have that!
The bizarre incident came about because British tourist Gail Brooker had planned her holiday down to the last detail – which included packing a roll of puff pastry so she could make her partner Peter Calder his favourite chicken pie while they were away.
But unfortunately, the bag was mistakenly left near a car hire desk at the airport, The Guardian reports, and the couple drove on to their holiday destination not knowing of the kerfuffle they had caused. Security staff thought the package was the explosive Semtex and promptly blew the bag to pieces, along with Mr Calder’s camera and binoculars.
Ms Brooker told the newspaper they realised the bag was missing when they arrived: “Peter tried to call the airport but it was closed although we didn’t realise it was closed because of a security scare.”
Mr Calder added: “I had to go to a police station in Toulouse the following day. They were not too pleased with us, although when I explained that Gail couldn’t find any puff pastry in France they did smile.”
