See Moab in the movies

Tuesday, 23 Jun, 2011 0

For television and movie-goers who often don’t even know it, Moab is a familiar site. It’s where the movie heroines of “Thelma and Louise” took their suicide plunge. The original Marlborough Man rode this red rock country. So did John Wayne.

The tiny southeastern Utah town calls itself the place “where adventure begins.” Adventurer names abound such as “Hell’s Revenge Trail” and “The Fiery Furnace.”

Even more recently, the town was the backdrop for filming the “127 Hours” movie, which is a somewhat harrowing account of how a hiker trapped in a remote slot canyon had to amputate his arm to escape.

Movies aside, the 5,000 population town is promoting itself these days as a provider of various adventure experiences such as climbing routes, multi-day rafting trips on the Colorado River and horseback riding in remote areas.
