Serial arsonist sought after three Waikiki hotel fires
Hawaii authorities are investigating three fires at Waikiki Beach resort hotels which they say is likely arson.
Police say they searching for a person of interest who was captured on CCTV at all three hotels prior to the fires.
Three blazes took place on three consecutive days earlier this week which were started in hallways near guestrooms in all three, Honolulu Fire Department Captain Scot Seguirant said.
There were no injuries but two of the hotels were evacuated.
It began on Sunday at the Alohilani Resort, followed by a blaze the following day at Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger, causing an estimated $1.8 million in damage.
A third fire broke out at the Hilton Hawaiian Grand Waikikian.
Honolulu Police say all three were intentionally started.
Authorities have footage of a man at all three hotels and believe the fires were started as a smokescreen to commit burglary.
Two rooms were burglarized at the Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger as the fire took hold.
Local media report there was a fourth fire at Waikiki Banyan along with a robbery reported at the time, but police say they haven’t yet been able to link it to the other fires.
Police are seeking help from the public to identify the suspect.
