Bolivia: Troops fire tear gas and rubber bullets in capital city protests

Violent demonstrations in the Bolivian capital La Paz have left 17 people dead and hundreds more injured.

The violence happened when striking police officers and protesters clashed with government forces on the city’s streets; reports suggest troops attacked the protestors with tear gas and rubber bullets, after which the demonstrators stormed the presidential palace and set fire to several government buildings.

At least seven of those killed are believed to be police officers, while the main hospital in the city says many more dead and injured are expected.

There are plans for more protests (which are mainly over planned tax increases and cuts in public spending), with the teachers’ union planning a major demonstration next Wednesday.

Anyone heading for Bolivia is urged to visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel for the latest government advice, though the Foreign Office does not yet refer to the violence on its website.
