Several critically injured as India fairground ride malfunctions
Several people were injured after an amusement park ride malfunction in India
A spinning drop tower ride at a fairground in the state of Punjab crashed to the ground with dozens of people on board.
The vertical ride abruptly dropped 50 feet to the ground, throwing riders from their seats.
Local media reported at least 15 were taken to hospital with 10 critically injured.
Most suffered neck and back injuries.
The ‘free fall’ drop is the primary feature of the ride, which is supposed to plunge at high speed before braking to a stop a few feet above the ground.
The fair organisers cited a ‘technical issue’ which is being fully investigated.
“We will find out how this happened. It seems there was a technical issue. We will cooperate with the police and administration,” said Sunny Singh, one of the fair’s promoters.
