Shanghai’s high hopes for giant wheel
Authorities in the Chinese city of Shanghai have revealed plans to build the biggest ferris wheel in the world – one that would dwarf the London Eye.
According to The Guardian, quoting the Shanghai Daily newspaper, the attraction will have a diameter of some 170 metres, 35 metres more than its counterpart in London.
The newspaper reports that it will boast 36 cabins capable of holding 30 people each; passengers will pay 100 yuan – about £6.50.
The giant wheel will be made even more impressive by the fact that it will be built on top of a 50-metre-high entertainment complex, The Guardian states.
The wheel’s chief designer is quoted as saying: “The motivation behind the project is to set up a new landmark structure that matches the city’s image as an international metropolis.”
The Guardian points out that the London Eye will still maintain an advantage over its Chinese equivalent: while passengers in London can see as far as 25 miles on a clear day, those is Shanghai are more likely to have their view interrupted by the city’s frequent smog clouds.
