Shooting at Vegas airport suicide attempt
A 19 year old is in critical condition at a Las Vegas hospital after he provoked a confrontation with police by holding a knife to a child’s throat, leading police to shoot him at McCarran International Airport. Authorities are calling the incident a suicide attempt.
The teenager had grabbed a 3-year-old boy from a toy store near the security checkpoint and placed a knife to the child’s throat. “When the teenager took the knife away from the child’s throat in order to lunge at one of the officers, reported the Associate Press, one officer stunned the teenager with a Taser, and two officers each fired their handguns once.
The child was returned to his parents unharmed. The family was identified only as being from southern Nevada and did know the teenager.
The teenager will face charges of kidnapping with the use of a deadly weapon and felony child endangerment.
His parents, who were not identified, told police their son had a history of mental illness, had been under medication, and had been acting strangely for about a year. He has had prior incident of altercations with police.
