Sicily flights resume amid double volcanic eruptions
Flights have resumed at Sicily’s Catania Airport as two volcanoes erupted. Mount Etna and Stromboli began spewing lava and ash clouds last week.
Catania flights have resumed but still with some restrictions.
Flights were halted on Friday due to risk of volcanic ash clouds.
It impacted Catania flights on easyJet and Ryanair.
On Stromboli, the Civil Protection agency issued the highest red alert and said it could get worse.
Mount Stromboli spewed ash clouds two kilometres into the sky while lava spilled into the sea.
“The runway at Catania Airport is unusable due to the volcanic ash fall. Both arrivals and departures are suspended,” the airport said on Friday.
Catania Mayor Enrico Trantino banned two-wheeled vehicles for two days and capped the speed limit to just 30 kmh.
Italy’s Civil Protection Department warned it could get worse.
“Active or potentially active volcanoes are situated in southern Italy with varying degrees of hazard,” it said.
It also advised tourists alike to ‘follow the civil protection authorities’ instructions.’
