Singapore, Australia working on air travel bubble

Singapore and Australia are working towards establishing an air travel bubble to resume two-way travel.

Both prime ministers said talks are progressing and it would likely begin by allowing travel for students between the countries.

"We discussed how two-way travel between Singapore and Australia can eventually resume, in a safe and calibrated manner, when both sides are ready," said Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong.

"It starts with mutual recognition of health and vaccination certificates, possibly in a digital form. When all the preparations are ready, then we can start small with an air travel bubble to build confidence on both sides."

If the flow of students is safe and successful, a travel corridor would be slowly expanded to include general leisure and business travel, the leaders said.

"Singapore is the first country outside of New Zealand that Australia would wish to engage in a travel bubble with and we want to get it right in Singapore," Aussie PM Scott Morrison said.
