Singapore can’t wait for 2010
SINGAPORE – Singapore believes it will insulate itself from the full impact of global recession with a swag of new projects and events that will culminate in making 2010 a boom year for the Lion City.
Ken Low, assistant chief executive brand and communications, Singapore Tourism Board, said Singapore was being transformed by new attractions that would include two integrated (casino) resorts, a business/MICE cluster being developed at Marina Bay, a new international cruise terminal and the 2010 Youth Olympics.
Low said Singapore would fall short of its 2008 target of 10.8 visitors but he expected a bounce back at some stage.
Looking ahead, he said the new projects would create 100,000 new hospitality jobs in Singapore and raise the contribution of tourism to the country’s GDP from three percent to six percent or more.
Further evidence of the Singapore slowdown is revealed by September traffic figures at Changi airport which show passengers number were down 0.4 percent, the first drop since 2004.
Singapore Airlines also carried fewer passengers across its network last month.
