Singapore conducting airport Nipah Virus screening
Singapore will start conducting airport screening for Nipah Virus exposure on some inbound flights.
Singapore’s Communicable Diseases Agency said it is monitoring the outbreak in West Bengal closely and has issued directives to hospitals to be on the lookout for possible infections.
It will screen passengers on specific flights from the region and is also stepping up checks on migrant workers arriving from South Asia.
The virus is spread mainly through bats but there has been a person-to-person transmission.
“The outbreak in West Bengal is reportedly between humans, with two cases so far. Human-to-human transmission is rare but does occur,” the CDA said.
Airport temperature screening will be conducted, targeted at flights arriving from the region and health information will be given to travellers informing them to seek medical attention if they become unwell.
“Work is ongoing to establish a global platform for countries to report genome sequencing of detected cases,” the CDA added.
“Should new information emerge to indicate an increased public health risk to Singapore, CDA stands ready to introduce additional public health measures.”
Indonesia, Thailand and Pakistan are among other countries screening inbound passengers.
