Singapore launches inquiry into Little India riot
Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong has ordered an official inquiry to look into a riot on Sunday night that has shocked the nation.
Twenty-four people are facing charges over the riot in the Little India district, which was triggered when an Indian worker was run over and killed by a private bus.
A mob set fire to vehicles and clashed with police, the first major riot in the city-state for more than 40 years.
The government has responded by ordering a total ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol this coming weekend in the Race Course Road area, scene of the riot.
Restaurants and shop owners along Race Course Road are worried their businesses may suffer as a result of Sunday’s violence.
One Indian restaurant manager told The Star that many locals preferred to stay away from the street due to the large crowds of foreigners, especially Indian nationals, who gather there on Sundays.
“They sit on the pavements, on the fields, drinking, talking and catching up, but their numbers scare away the locals," he said.
