SITA buys travel technology specialist
SITA INC has bought the Ireland-based travel technology firm, ELAND Technologies.
ELAND becomes a part of SITA’s Passenger and Travel Solutions division, which supplies data networking and communications services to the air transport industry, and counts Air France, British Airways, and Priceline among its customers. SITA has around 3,800 staff and is registered in Amsterdam.
SITA managing director, Francesco Violante said: “At a time when all involved in travel and transportation are looking to web technologies to help reduce costs and increase business process efficiencies, SITA is extremely pleased to be adding specialized middleware products and integration skills to complement and expand our capabilities.”
ELAND has been operating for 13 years and is best known for its Runaway application, which is an integration platform used by airlines like American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and the Star Alliance. The company has 60 employees, who will boost SITA’s e-commerce integration skills. SITA is expected to switch from Eland’s fee-based model to a transaction-based system.
The purchase sum has not been disclosed.
SITA is well-known for the annual Airline IT Trends Survey it produces, which examines the views held by 200 major airlines about technology. SITA recently developed a system that will allow travellers to check their travel details simply by searching for their flight number, airline code, and the suffix .aero on the internet. It is also working on a system that will allow travellers to check all services between given destinations.
