UK: Many policies are not adequate, warns analyst

Travellers heading for the ski slopes should check their travel insurance before they set off – because skiers often settle for policies that are not adequate, according to financial analysts. Data specialists Defaqto has highlighted the fact that many insurance policies aimed at skiers do not protect against loss of skis or lift passes, piste closure, loss of hired equipment or a lack of snow. Mark Hayes Newington, of Defaqto, said: “Somepolicies will not pay the full replacement cost and many will pay nothing if the equipment is more than five years old.” He added: “Also, watch out for policies that insist on original receipts for paying claims.” The company is recommending that skiers should take out an annual policy that will cover them for a summer trip as well; it will almost certainly be cheaper than taking out two policies – but travellers should still take care to check the cover offered is adequate.
