Skiers stranded by giant boulder
Thousands of skiers were stranded in the French Alps over the weekend after a 50-tonne boulder cut off the road leading to Val Thorens and Les Menuires.
Coaches were unable to enter or leave the resorts after the road was deemed too dangerous for large vehicles to use by local authorities.
Crystal Ski Holidays tweeted that it had arranged a fleet of minibuses to take customers to local airports so they could leave on ‘rescue flights’.
It also said it had arranged accommodation for all affected customers arriving in Chambery and Geneva airports, reports the Telegraph.
The blockage came at the end of the French school holidays, one of the busiest times of the year for the ski resorts.
Some holidaymakers were able to use a minor road leading to and from the resorts but it was only usable by private cars.
The main road reoped late on Saturday after emergency workers dynamited the giant boulder blocking it and then repaired the road surface.
