Two trains crashed in Slovakia on Sunday evening reported news agency Reuters, after one ran into the back of the other. The crash occurred in a corridor between the capital Bratislava and Pezinok, 20 km northeast, which is generally busy with commuters. The accident injured dozens of passengers, police and the country’s interior minister said.
Speaking at the crash site, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said on a televised briefing that dozens were lightly injured and 11 were taken to the hospital. There were no deaths in the crash, he said.
“According to preliminary information, there was no head-on collision of trains, nor was there a train derailment,” police said on Facebook.
The accident is the second in Slovakia in the past month. Reuters highlights that two trains collided in eastern Slovakia on October 13, injuring 91 people.
Both accidents justify to speed investment into modernizing Slovak railways, as such collision typically involve a failure in either signalling, train-control and communication systems. According to the state train operator, ZSSK almost 35 percent of all train delays in Slovakia are caused by track failures or engineering works.
Slovak rail modernization include many grants from the European Union as well as the European Investment Bank. Early November, the European Commission provided a grant of €135 million to modernize railway lines and increase safety around Kosice, Slovakia’s second largest city. EIB funds represent some €4.8 billion in investment for a more affordable, green and sustainable transport network in Slovakia and is provided until 2027.
Key investments concern the rail network around Kosice, the upgrade in rail connections with Austria as well as with Ukraine. It also involves installation of modern signalling systems for interoperability / safety, the electrification of lines to increase speed and capacity as well as the procurement of new rolling stock.
