Slow fish for Genoa

Monday, 14 Apr, 2015 0

From May 14 – 17, the coastal city of Genoa in northern Italy will host Slow Food’s international event dedicated to sustainable fishing

Delegates from over 15 countries are expected at this year’s Slow Fish event, along with seafood-lovers from around the world, who will gather in the city’s old port area to meet producers and fishmongers; learn more about artisanal fishing and of course… eat fish!

Visitors will not only have the chance to discover and sample a huge diversity of fish (many not commonly used in everyday cooking), but also salt, spices, extra-virgin olive oil, pesto, beer and wine – including many local specialties from the region of Liguria.

This year’s event will give special attention to the problems of pollution and the shortage of young people who are replacing older retiring fishers. It will also examine issues related to governance, using local ecological knowledge and involving local communities.

There is a packed program of interactive workshops, presentations and conferences dedicated to creating a greater awareness of the importance of our choices and behavior in determining the state of health of the seas.

The event program offers multisensory experiences with tastings and reflections on food culture and tradition: 21 Taste Workshops in which artisans and chefs organize tastings along with marine biologists and fishers. The Taste Workshops tackle important themes such as biodiversity with the support of some of the most famous Italian marine biologists; eight Cooking School lessons held by Master of Food teachers; and four Dinner Dates with stars of Italian and international cuisine.

A new feature for 2015 will be the presence of some 30 producers from the two Ligurian Earth Markets: Cairo Montenotte and Sarzana. In addition, the Genoa Fish Market as well as the event’s Fish Market will offer a rich display of fresh and preserved fish, as well as oils, spices, salts, seaweeds and other fish products.

Visitors will once more get the chance to discover tasty specialties in the Street Food area and enjoy a glass of wine from the Enoteca run by the Pollenzo Wine Bank or an artisanal beer in the Beer Piazza. This year the Beer Piazza is even more impressive, with some of the peninsula’s best artisanal beer, as selected in Slow Food’s beer guide (Guida alle birre d’Italia).
