Smooth sledding for US ski industry

Saturday, 12 Dec, 2005 0

The outlook for the American ski industry: no potholes, full speed ahead.

Some resorts have opened earlier than normal because of autumn snowfalls.

“And so far there’s no evidence that higher gasoline costs will keep skiers away,” wrote the Associated Press.

Maine’s preseason sales of lift tickets, for example, are ahead of last year’s, according to Greg Sweetser of the Ski Maine Association.

Sugarloaf Mountain had an unusual 40-inch dumping of snow before Halloween.

Bookings at major western US ski resorts were up 6.6% from the same time last year, according to the Mountain Travel Research Project.

Also out west, the Lake Tahoe Visitor’s Authority predicts an 18% increase in hotel room nights expected this winter.
