Some flights resume to Haiti

US airlines started resuming some flights to riot-torn Haiti Sunday, although flight disruption continues amid ongoing unrest.

American Airlines still has three flights to Haiti suspended as of Sunday.

"We’re continuing to monitor the situation, but we expect normal operation," American Airlines spokesman Curtis Blessing said

Violent clashes were sparked by a proposed gas price hike which was later temporarily halted by the Haiti Prime Minister.

However unrest continued with widespread looting in Port-au-Prince and eldewhere.

A US government advisory is still in force.

"Due to continuing demonstrations, roadblocks, and violence across Port-au-Prince and throughout Haiti, U.S. citizens should shelter in place," the State Department said.

"Do not travel to the airport unless you confirmed your flight is departing."

On Saturday, at least 120 Americans were holed up in a hotel after rioters unsuccessfully tried to get past security and set it on fire.

JetBlue has not yet restarted flights but may do so later on Monday.

"We continue to monitor reports of civil unrest near the Port-Au-Prince airport and have canceled flights. Customers should check their flight status before heading to the airport," said JetBlue spokesperson Mindy Romero.

Along with JetBlue, Spirit Airlines flights still remain suspended until at least Monday.

A number of US based church and missionary groups are still stranded in the country.

One group, United Methodist Providence Church in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, said they were prevented from getting to the airport by numerous road blocks.
